Sandip Mitra : 1985 -- 2007
One who is especially gifted in the perception and expression of the beautiful or lyrical
Born in one of the erudite families in Shillong in 1985, the young evolving soul remained in a serene ambience of art and music. Alongside his training as a dancer, he nourished a brilliant sense of poetic excellence. At the age of just 17 he completed his first book of poems. His remarkable vocabularies and strong hold on language in sync with an intense imagination proven beautifully through the metaphoric frills and comparisons used, have evidently enabled him to deal with delicate issues and controversial subjects with liquid ease. In the year 2002 came a vile incident that landed him in the bed for months together near death! All he had, the vile sight of death all around, a pen and paper. The silhouettes of death lurking in the shadow of every day showed him how beautiful the life was! Bewildering pain taught him to comfort those who are not blessed with the ability to withstand even lesser agonies! In his own words, 'If I had not been wounded for life I would never have been able to heel the wounds of those about me.' However uncertain his life might have been at that time, one thing that was ascertained was his friendship with poetry! His own language, his very own thought was woven into marvelous creations! All his acute experiences have been brilliantly pronounced in his creations. His works are fascinating, rich and beautifully expressed. His plain, intelligent and unvarnished study of human emotion is absolutely gripping. All his literary creations deserve to be read. He perceived things differently. He said in his first book releasing function at the Crossword, Kolkata " I am an ordinary human being but perceive things differently. Nature does not appeal to me much. Rather, human emotions like joy and sorrow move me to write poems. I love using human beings as a metaphor." ( Hindustan Times Kolkata, Thursday 4 January 2007). Though his creations were not confined to only literary field, poetry writing was his passion. At the time of his premature demise in the month of May 2007, he was a student of NIFT, Kolkata. Fashion Designing was his dream. His perspective was truly fascinating! Putting together his extraordinary talent in different fields, his poetry and other writings, his creative excellence in the Fashion Designing also started adding flavour to the field and was bringing his dreams to the sunshine of reality with the same ease with which he played between fiction and reality with full conviction. We shall trace Sandip's childhood, adolesence and recount how he achieved such outstanding poetic excellence at this age.
